Delhi government to reserve nearly 70% Delhi University seats for Delhiites

Delhi government to give Delhi students a gift by reserving nearly 68% of undergraduate seats across 28 Delhi University colleges which get city government grants. If this proposal is yet to get green signal from Centre, it will be big change for aspirants and those who are planning to get admission into different Delhi University colleges in upcoming session.

Union Human resource development ministry reacted with surprise at the decision and ministry sources said the fact is that this step has not been taken in order to give students a gift, but with the vision to woo students vote bank for the upcoming election. The ministry is sure that this proposal has been prepared with election in mind not to benefit students only.

This decision was declared by Delhi higher education minister AK Walia, who said reservation for students from Delhi will be 90% in 12 DU colleges, which receive 100% funds by the city. In 16 other colleges, which get 50% grants and 5% recurring grants form Delhi government, the local quota would be 50%.

Taking consideration of year 2012-13 enrolments across these 28 colleges, the move will reserve nearly 12,000 first-year seats for city students. Walia said the decision was to response to a court order. He said, “The high court had, in its recent order, directed the state and the university to resolve the issue. Based on that, we have come up with this formula for reservation in colleges that are fully or partially funded by us.”
